Life of a 1st generation lawyer

Hello friends, if you are thinking of becoming a lawyer and that to a first generation lawyer meaning that you being the first person in your family to become a lawyer then this road will certainly not be a cakewalk.

This can be attributed to a series of causes some of which are mentioned below

  • Huge competition
  • No establishment of past generation
  • Lack of any practical exposure
  • Left stipend and salary
  • No link to the seniors in this profession

Now here are some tips in order to stick to the enormous and challenging task of becoming a practicing advocate.

  1. First of all right from your college days start reading your books thoroughly meaning not just read them for your exam purpose but read each and every judgement/ case law completely and make proper notes of the same in this way you can make use of these notes as and when required.
  2. Be proactive and improve your skills of research and drafting
  3. Immediately after your each semester, try to join any internship where you can get practical exposure.
  4. During your internship try to learn as much as you can and also analyse in which field of law you want to make your career.

  5. Make sure that during your internship you are not only confined to your office in doing Research and other desk jobs but you should also attend the court hearings.
  6. Further try to establish connections with other lawyers and seniors of this field ask for their guidance whenever you are confused.
  7. Once you complete your course, analyse your financial position and then move forward. It means if you want a good salary package immediately then without thinking you can join any corporate where you will get paid a good amount from day one.
  8. On the other hand if you don't require a good amount of money from the first day and you are ready to work for a basic stipend for several years then you can get into practice under a senior and get yourself a equipped with the knowledge of litigation field. And side by side you can prepare for your Judiciary exams as well or you can study ahead in legal field by opting for courses like LLM.

I hope I made myself clear about the struggles that you will face in becoming a lawyer and how you can overcome these struggles and become a successful advocate.
